In the evaluation of smell control, the whole odor at the fence line is assessed as if it may be described as one so-called sewage treatment plant odor. An olfactometer is used as a dilution scale to determine the total scent concentration or odor strength. We do know, however, that various wastewater treatment methods can produce a variety of odors, and that these odors are diluted out at varying rates. Would it be better to examine each treatment process's unique odor character or quality, as well as its unique odor intensity, and then assess how these odors change as they approach the fence line?
